Just a quickie, with the hub removed completely, the outer cv joint, the outer part of it at least, should just pull off shouldn't it? I have a failed wheel bearing and the inner race is stuck fast, it would be much easier to deal with if I could separate the outer joint and have it in the workshop.

The Drive Shaft does have a C Clip that, when fitted up, is Internal within the CV Joint that holds it in place.

If the Joint and it's boot is otherwise OK, I wouldn't separate it there to get it to the bench, but at the Inner Joint.

Using a long Screw Driver, if you land it at an angle between the Inner Joint Boot and the Drive Shaft, it should land on the Inner Spider of the Inner Joint, Give it a sharp tap with a hammer and the drive shaft should separate from the Inner Joint.

Sure Spin :proud:

This one is part separated, the red arrow is on the inner Spider that you need to tap

It's the Green part in this drawing (note that the factory removal tool is also shown in this too)

Awesome replies, so I take it to refit it the same just tap it back in? I should remember this but it was a good few months ago when I had them in bits. Any particular reason why it's better to separate the inner joint? Just curious.

Yes, usually just a tap to get them back in.

I like to do them this way as the joints are sealed off with the boot in place, keeps the muck out of them and that YUK DREADFUL grease that is made in the Devil's workshop off you, your dog, your carpet, your bed sheets and yr missus,,,,,,,

I have mine in the vice and even though it is loose (not rusted) I still for the life of me cannot tap it off - must have a odd ball C clip inside :ohno:

Ah yes got you SM, I'm doing this in a car park not far from our place but far enough from the heating equipment and vice. If I get trouble with the inner spider and long screw driver ( I remember it now after your pic and diagram) will the outer cv just pull off? I think it has to be dead inline with Drive shaft for it to come off iirc. Just trying to cover the bases and get her home again today. Thanks so much for your prompt replies.

Yes, that comes off the same was as it does on the Inner CV, however it's harder to hold the drive shaft 'in place' to do it that way, you may do better to pop the inner CV apart - just to cover that base, however, if you do do it that way, take a few smaller plastic bags and some ties, so that you can back up the inner as soon as it's apart before pulling through the subframe or if the balls fall out, at least you'll be able to scoop them in to something.

Sometimes the C Clips spread and then part of it slips down the splines. The only way I've found to get them apart when that happens it to belt the joint many times hard to eventually shear the clip. Dreadful when it happens, but little else I can think of to get them apart.

All sorted thanks chaps. New bearing fitted in car park used the plain washer to compress the inner races as per hbl I'm pretty sure we didn't do that on first build, live and learn. On the plus side no1 son got to do a bit of turning when we made the washer. Cheers again.
