My mini 3.1 diff had some in/out play in the offside output shaft. I have taking the diff out and the right hand shaft moves in/out a few mm. The gear pushes in against the pin but then there is a gap between the gear and diff cage. Should the be something there to take up the slack?

Sounds like the Thrust Washer has disintegrated, and that's common for these.

The early cars has brass thrusts and never gave any trouble, shame they are no longer available.

 

If you are going to replace it, best overhaul the whole diff, including these washers, the planet gears & thrusts for them and the Pin (get the highest quality available). Also, check the bushes in the Crown Wheel & the Hemisphere.

Or put in a cross pin diff, solve all these problems at once?
