I take it that if the knuckle joint rubber is not attached to the nylon cup its a mot fail? I have refitted the front ones on the van but they have come off again, is there something to make them more supple or am i wasting my time and need to replace them all?

Are the rebound rubbers under the top arm in place and in good condition?  This will help stop them coming off, otherwise If they keep coming off they probably need replacing and yes they'll likely fail the MOT if not on properly.

Just to clarify, Unburntfuelinthemorning is referring to the Rebound Stops, they are the L shaped little pads.

With the aftermarket ones when I used to use them, I used to fit a small cable tie around the outer lip of the boot to stop them coming off, but, if the Rebound Pad isn't in place, then you can expect them to come off.

Also the quality of these rubber dust covers is horrendous these days - perishing after less than a year! My original 35 year old ones are now back on.

Very tricky to get them on properly... all I'd say is, try and get the void between the arm and the nylon seat as clean as possible so the rubber boot has something to cling on to.  I use a radiator hose tool to coax them into position, it's like a screwdriver but with a curved end.

Regarding the MoT, I'd hope your tester is 'au fait' with Minis and classic cars.  While the rubber not being attached is not ideal, in use it's pretty well squashed into position and I've never had one fill with water/ road muck.  My man would not fail the car if this little boot wasn't fitted quite right...

I turn them inside out and unfold them once on. Never had one come off since.

I'll be holding mine in place with lockwire once it's back together, bit smaller than a cable tie so should sit into the lip a bit better
