Hi All,

Got an issue with my headlights.

When I turn the switch to sidelights I get both side lights on plus the left hand full beam.
When I turn the main beam it stays the same but the right hand main beam doesn’t work. (Tried changing the lamp)
If I use the full beam the left hand goes off and the right hand comes on.

The wiring isn’t very good so I wondered if its worth just ordering a new wiring loom for the lights and starting again?

I have a multimeter but not sure what to test first?

Again very new to minis so apologies for lots of questions ?

Test voltage at the switch and stalk. Use a multimeter or power probe.

If there is power on the circuits to the light, check the bulb

What year of mini?

I’ve swapped the lamp with a new one and still nothing, I’ll test it tomorrow with my multimeter.

It’s a 92 Mayfair

Hi,

Sounds like a bad earth, most likely the clump of bullet connections by the bonnet catch.

Cheers  :proud:

Thanks, ideally I’d like to just fix it for now as there’s more pressing issues but a upgraded loom is on the list.

I’ll have another play tomorrow night see if I can find it

Make sure someone hasn't connected things wrong / badly by the bonnet catch.

Sidelights - red
Dipped beam - blue/red
Full beam - blue/white
Earth - black.

The sidelights and headlights share a common earth each side that then merges by the bonnet catch and onto the inner wing.

Therefore if the sidelights work both sides its unlikely an earth issue ;-).

Id bet someone's messed about and mixed up the wires.

Pop the switch out and look at that too. The connectors have a habit of melting. In general, just run through the wires, lights are very simple.

Input:

Brown wire to Switch

Sidelights:

Switch to Red wire to Fusebox to Red/Green wire to Sidelights, tail lights and dash illumination

Main/Dipped is a little more complicated so break it into a few parts:

Switch to Blue wire to Stalk

Stalk to Blue/Red wire to Dipped lights

Stalk to Blue/White wire to Main beam and dash tell-tale

Stalk to Blue wire to Inline Fuse to Blue/Orange wire to Fog light switch to Blue/Yellow wire to Fog light and tell-tale

There is also the purple wire into the stalks which allows Main Beam to be used separately (flash) but that's not part of your problem.
