Good evening all.
So,after changing the oil,resetting plug gaps,changing the needle and tweeking the mixture the flat spot has virtually gone.
So the next thing on the list has got to be the brakes.
The car is a 1989 with 1275 a+ motor and is running a standard set up with 8.4 discs.
What would be the best direction to go in for a meatier stoping force?
I don't plan on changing the wheels from 12 inch so anything has to fit inside the 12 inch alloys.
I don't want to go silly on price as the mini won't be used that much,it's a 'weekend toy'

I found the single biggest improvement was to go to 4 Spot Calipers. I doubt you'd need anything more than that.

Good pads, and don't necessarily mean uprated ones either, it's likely that cheap "weatabix" pads have been stuck in there in which case a set of normal mintex's will make a big difference. Same goes for the discs too

No,but I think I will be replacing the standard lines with them.

Braided lines may increase your insurance-you should check before you do it.

I agree they are a good upgrade and it is worth paying a little bit more on my insurance for the improvement they provide.

 

I have run with 4 pot callipers and I would be hard pressed to feel a difference over the standard ones. Keith Calver wrote a good article explaining this; it may be on the Minispares website. Maths tells you you get slightly better braking with 4 pots.

They are a lot lighter and sexier-but for day to day work, I do not think they are worth the premium; others will disagree, I am sure.

 

I agree about pad quality. I have only ever used EBC pads.

For a road car the best brakes are standard top-quality 8.4" discs, callipers in good condition, braided brake lines and Mintex 1144 pads.

Mintex pads are dynamite! Did wonders on my car, practically eliminated any fade that I had previously. I also upgraded the rotors and fitted braided lines. Still running standard cooper calipers, which are also new.
Oh and I’m running 7.5 brakes, but the principal is the same.

I have found that for normal road use and small road rallies the Mintex 1144 is all you ever need when combined with 8.4" discs and standard callipers. For more aggressive driving such as racing or tarmac special stage rallies the 1166 or 1177 pads are better.
For 7.5" discs I used to use the 1177, but the absolute best pads are the Carbon-Metallic ones as supplies by Mini Spares are the absolute best ever, for road, rally or race. You are advised to use a race brake fluid for competition use.
