Hi,

My engine is new from top to bottom and I'm setting the valve clearances. I've heard it is possible to set the valve clearances 180 degrees out depending on where the piston is position at the initial set up.

I'm going to use the rule of 9 and set the valve clearance to 0.012 as normal however I just need to know where piton 1 needs to be to star the process off.

Thanks in advance,

you use the 9 combination No:1 valve closed No:8 open adjust No;1 , then 2-7, 3-6, 4-5, 5-4, 6-3, 7-2, 8-1 turning the engine over in anti clockwise rotation with out plugs in,,, that is the dizzy drive that can be 180 out

to check that the dizzy drive is correct you will neet to get No:1 piston TDC on the firing stroke this is when NO;s 1 and 2 valves are closed and No:7 valve just opening now remove dizzy cap and see where rotor arm is pointing should be pointing at No:2 spark plug

is that the same for the mpi when it runs a coil pack?

also is closed where the rocker is fully depressed the spring down and opening means just past the point of full spring compression and starting to go back up?

Don't worry about anything else apart from what's under the rocker cover.

You can roll the car in 4th gear, or jack up one wheel and turn that whilst in 4th. Taking the spark plugs out makes this easier.

Turn the engine until the Rocker 1 is at its lowest point. Don't worry if you have to go backwards and forwards a few times to get it right. Valve 1 is now fully open and Spring 1 is fully compressed.

You can now check and adjust Rocker 8.

Find the lowest point for Rocker 2.

You can now check and adjust Rocker 7.

Find the lowest point for Rocker 3.

You can now check and adjust Rocker 6.

Etc etc.

Oh, also check each after adjustment. It's a bit of a fiddle holding the screwdriver steady whilst tightening the lock nut, and you can inadvertently move it.

If you have roller rockers, measure from the side, not the front. Otherwise you'll get a misleading measurement.
