Hi all
I’m after help again?
I have been rebuilding my car for last 5 years and put in a new wiring loom (correct one for my car 1985 mini Mayfair)
Connected battery up yesterday and have a few issues.
I have attached a video showing it. Apologies for the darkness but it’s still visible.
Brief description of faults.
When I turn ignition on,
fuel gauge goes to full (about half a gallon in tank),
Warning light in bottom right dimly illuminates,
When I turn lights on (fitted wired by Wilson central switches) left indicator warning light illuminates constantly,
When I put hazards on, the dash back lights flash in time with indicators.
All lights, wipers, heater etc work as they should when you press the appropriate switch, it’s just issues with the dash

Hope you can help and more importantly it’s an easy fix
Thanks
Steve

At first thought there is incorrect connection between red/green and green/red somewhere.

Red/green is illumination

Green/red is left hand indicators

But if its a brand new loom im assuming you had to patch in the instrument cluster plug.
Check you've not mis matched the above two wires.

Hi David
Thanks for replying. That seems to make sense. Are these connections behind dash, the connections to your centre switches or the the ones in engine bay?
If I indicate left, the left indicator flashes and vice versa so presumed they were connected correctly
Any thoughts on fuel gauge?

As above, sounds like earthing issues.  Also check battery voltage, make sure its fully charged.  Low voltage can give some funny issues.

Thanks. It’s a brand new loom and all earths were securely fastened to clean bodywork. I will double check tho. The battery is brand new and fully charged

Sounds very much like the issue I've had. It was an earth that wasn't spotless clean. I tapped the mounting Union and fit a new mild steel bolt and it fixed it.

Well the switches are always tested prior to dispatch so it's unlikely to be them.

So the indicators flash correctly on the car and dash when the lights are off?

Your video showed the dash illumination flashing in time with the indicators and the indicator bulb on permanently with the sidelights on?

Did you have to connect in your own multiplug that goes into the back of the clocks - is I have just worked on a brand new loom and they do not come with a plug fitted.

Have you checked the clock wiring at all? The multiplug has a red/green wire (illumination) and a green/red wire (left indicator).

It's easy to muddle these up - check which goes live with a test light and let me know.

David

Behind the dash - But I need to know if you have connected the clock multiplug or if it was fitted to the new loom.

Your video shows dash illumination flashing on left indicator and left indicator tell tale illuminated permanently with sidelights.

So i'm confused now as the video contradicts what you've just said  :mmkay:

Fuel gauge could again be a mis-connection as that's the green/black wire in the plug.

Hi David
The multi plug was already fitted on the loom. I purchased the loom from autosparks.
Regarding confusion, what I meant was if I indicate left or right, the correct indicator flashes around car. The dash indicator warning doesn’t flash.
I’ve not had a chance to check wiring yet due to work. Should get time on it tomorrow day hopefully.

Hmmm, thats odd then as the autosprks loom i've been working on didn't have the speedo plug - just the 10 wires and bullets crimped on.

I'd check that plug as the behaviour in the video is carbon copy of those wires being the wrong way round in the multiplug.

Find me on FB @wiredbywilson2 and I can chat to you directly and confirm with photos etc of the loom plugs and pin numbers I have.

Have just checked my rear loom was autosparks, my front one was from minispares. HAM4385. It did come with the plug tho. Just had a look on Facebook and can only see your old page. Can’t find @wiredbywilson2. Can I still message you through the old page.
Many thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Well I’ve just taken speedo binnacle out and disconnected plug at rear. Some of the metal tabs on the connector block seemed a bit flat so I bent them out a bit. Connected back up and all working as it should.

So, I’m a little confused. I wonder if I had put the plug in wrong way round and that’s why I had the few problems. I haven’t touched anything else.
Main thing is it’s sorted ?
Thanks for all the advice

You may have as the plug has blank terminal grooves in different positions on either side.
