Hi guys,

My headlights are not working now for some reason as they have been working previously,

I first thought it could be the switch so i pulled it out and check I was getting 12V at the brown wire (which i was) then bridged the brown to the red and no dash lights or side lights worked, I then bridged brown and blue and no headlights.

I noticed when bridging the brown with the other wires there was no voltage showing at the brown wire anymore?

I have checked all the fuses and connections in the engine bay and all seem ok

Anyone got any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Thanks

Age of mini is important as the systems have different fusing on later cars.

Anyway

Brown is 12v permanent to switch

Red is sidelights - direct to bulbs without a fuse on the front

Blue goes from switch to stalks via dim-dip system (usually). Are you getting 12v at the contacts on the stalks?

Blue-red is dipped headlights - should feed out of stalk connections.

Do you have flashers at all?

Run a separate live wire directly from either the battery positive terminal or from the starter solenoid (where the brown wires are connected) to the red and then to the blue wires on the headlamp switch plug in turn.  This should cause the sidelights and headlights to illuminate respectively.  If it does then the fault lies in the live feed to the headlight switch as CityEPete is suggesting.

If that doesn't work, try temporarily removing the sidelight fuse.  Then run the live wire to the red/green wire coming from one side of where you removed the fuse.  This should cause the sidelights to light.  Try the same with the fuse replaced.  If the sidelights then do not work you may have a problem with the dim/dip relay.  I'm assuming that you have an F-reg model as in your profile picture.

I'll bet you've got a bad connection at the fuse box where the thick brown wires are joined or at the starter solenoid where all the brown wires meet from the main battery lead.

Probably got 12v but no actual amps there, enough to register on a test meter but not enough to actually light even the side lights.
