De-grease/gunk in reference to "operating theatre clean"

 

Best rated product,most widely used,bulk quantity ?

De grease for the outside, so not a massive quantity

 

I use lint-free cotton cloths for the inside and brake cleaner. We buy it from Worth, 25litres a time, but you can get it in spray tins.

 

Try not to inhale the stuff, it makes my dog sneeze when she's 5m away.

 

Its also worth buying some pipe cleaners for the small oil galleries [like in the crank]

 

If you can 'operate' on a clean bench and keep your tools and hands clean too it all helps.

 

An engine stand is a big help...if you can beg or borrow one....I start them up on the stand too.

I've just(virtually)finished my first gearbox re-furb/engine build. I used a big plastic laundry tub and paraffin from a garden centre to de-grease. Then I followed the Guessworks and MiniMania videos (the latter is clearer but misses some stages)Getting the 1st motion? nut off was physically the hardest part - I piled some bags of cement and my wife on top of the box and used a long tube to crack it. Watch out for pinging springs and ballbearings around the baulk rings. I can recommend having the casings vapour blasted - really brings them up well, I also had all the fixings re zinc plated because I hate re-using tatty components. My diff carrier was scrap because the thrusts had spun, eating into the cast iron housing - getting a cross pin diff was about the same price as a new carrier so a no-brainer.
As it's specialist work I had the block and head checked and machined/ported/unleaded converted & the crank ground/balanced then I assembled it all.
If you buy a Dti gauge, make sure it's a substantial one - the probe on mine was much too spindly when it came to checking TDC on the pushrods (they need to be kept upright by the probe and there's resistance from the thick build grease on the followers) Good luck - I've really enjoyed my build and can't wait to install and run it later this year.
