Hello people's..
Had some time spent on the Mini today and am wondering if the clutch release bearing is a bit dodgy.
The clutch seems to be a bit rough sometimes at engaging,by that I mean it suddenly bites, but sometimes it is smooth like a clutch should be.
It can also be hard to engage gear sometimes, especially 1st and 2nd but if I go from 3rd it will go into gear better.
I have noticed a clunk when you release the clutch pedal and a bit of rough sounding noise which disappears when you press the clutch in again.
I am wondering if the release bearing is going to give up at some point.
Thanks for any help folks.

Cheap to buy and easy to replace, a job well worth doing if you have any doubts.

Sudden biting of the clutch can be the friction plate ‘sticking’ to the flywheel or pressure plate.

Well worth checking and making sure everything is okay.

As said above which system is it? Pre verto or verto?

It can be rust, dust and oil, on the lining / flywheel / backplate

it can also be the spinner plate sticking and binding on the primary gear, as it slides (or not) on the splines

So,me thinks, take the cover plate off, check components and replace release bearing while I'm in there, right?

Personally fit the complete clutch kit, and primary gear seal

Cover off, flywheel off, check primary gear end-float then primary gear off

Strip the clutch and check everything, clean every single thing. Best thing is clutch and brake cleaner.

Make sure there is plenty of meat on the spinner plate and that it moves nicely on the primary gear splines.

Primary gear should be spotless, check inside it too, they can bind up on the crank tail.

Fit the new trust bearing

Reassemble and refit the whole issue, should be sorted, and I hope it is.

It does sound a bit drastic but its probably the best way,

Its one of those where there is probably very little wrong and you strip it find nothing, clean it all and it works perfectly afterwards.

It could also be the master or slave cylinder but points more towards the clutch itself
