Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

I hope this message finds you all well. I have a quick question.

I have a 1974 round-nose car, I'm slowly working my way from back to front sorting out perished rubbers etc.

Amongst other things, I am going to be installing a new set of front cones and high-lows, so I've been looking at the job and trying to figure out what tools I'm going to have to buy.

I know I'll need a cone spring compressor, and because I don't know whether the car has had the front springs changed over the course of it's life, I'm going to have to buy the double ended tool.

The second tool that has cropped up in my research is the 34mm Socket for removing the sub-frame top mounting bolts.

This is where I've run into a bit of an issue - as I don't seem to have any sub-frame top bolts - I have some holes, which I had assumed were for access to the top of the cone spring, and were originally blanked off with a rubber grommets.

Have the how-to's I've read been carried out on a later car, or am I missing something potentially vital? The

If so is a pair of the standard items from Mini Spares going to do the job?  And what do they do they bolt into?

I'm sorry if this is a bit of daft question, but I can't seem to find the answer, or I'm asking the question wrong.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

A '74 car won't have the big tower bolts, instead it has the mk1 style 'twin bolt' subframe that is bolted solidly to the vehicles body.
You should have a rubber grommet in the large hole in the cross member and a bolt either side of that hole thats secured with a lock tab.

If you don't have the correct 4 top securing bolts for the subframe, they can be replaced with cylinder head studs (from memory, the long ones) and suitable nuts/washers.  They will also greatly facilitate easy fitting of the subframe into place.

Not possible to take a photo of your situation for us to better understand what is going on there? As stated there should be two bolts or nuts either side of the big hole.

Sounds like you may just be missing the rubber grommet that covers the hole that you would used the spring compressor with and perhaps you've been looking for the large tower bolts which you shouldn't have on a '74 model and missed the 2 smaller bolts either side? As mentioned pics would help.

Lol! I suspect that is probably the case. I'll have a check tomorrow evening, and let you know.

Thanks,

Matt
