Front Suspension Cone Removal, Seized To Trumpet

Best Answer Homersimpson , 21 July 2018 - 04:13 PM

I've seen people separate them with an air chisel inserted between the donut and trumpet, if you don't have one then just cut the trumpet.

Hi All,

Slowly progressing with my very long project... got to replacing the Suspension Rubber and Cone's and the Front Passenger Side is Seized to the Trumpet. I've tried heating it up a few times but it's awkward as its in the front subframe still. Is there a way to remove it with it Seized?

I've removed the top arm to give me more space and got that off. The top of the cone where the thread for the compression tool to fit is filled with rust and has no usable thread left so, although the Top Arm is out luckily so I have some movement.

I'm guessing it's going to be cut the trumpet with a saw of some kind. I have a replacement so I don't particulary care about the trumpet.

Thanks for the advice!

tino

The only comment to add is that if you can't get at it with a saw then drill multiple holes in one area until it will snap when hit with a suitable piece of bar/chisel

Hi,

Hammer and chisel between the two. Try it with the cone compressed to give you something solid to hit against.

Cheers  :proud:

Didn't think of this! Made light work of it

The thread on the other side had rusted and there was nothing for the cone compressor to thread into. It only just held enough to get the top arm out.

If it doesn’t come apart then the hammer isn’t big enough!

That's how I've done them, only, I found it easier to leave them in the subframe as then I had something to hold the rubber cone, but didn't compress them too much or it's too hard to get at.

Thanks everyone for their replies, it is much appreciated.

The Air Chisel worked in seconds and made light work of it.

The old cone is in a pretty bad shape.
