I have just set the clearance on the primary gear and when fitting the oil seal it got damaged. When I removed the primary gear to get it out I noticed that the primary gear has damage (not sure how I managed it) on the rim just past the helical part. Is this part just an oil slinger and can I try to bend it back or is the primary gear fubar.

Cheers

The slinger is a separate but not normally serviceable item. You should be able to remove it to reshape it. In re-shaping it, you'll need to make sure the ID is just smaller than the plain seal face, then warm it in hot oil to expand it and drop it back on. If you have another old primary gear, you could pinch the slinger off that.

The earlier gears (up to about 65 or so) didn't have them and the latest non-originals also don't have them. You could also run the gauntlet and try without it too.

Ahh good, I'll give that a go. Cheers
