OK so the standard mirror fit to the glass. There are 3 holes in the cross member where the mirror would go, I can feel them through the roof lining. What sort of holes are there and can I use them to fit a stranded mirror to it ?

Do you mean that you have an MPI car with the window mounted mirror but want to change it to the standard type that mounts to the cross member and suction cups to window?

On the cars fitted with the old style mirror, there are captured nuts that the screws attach to. No idea if there are still there on the MPI shell though.

Yes, the holes are already there, I fitted a pre-97 mirror to my 99 Sportspack.

On the topic of mirrors, is there a direct replacement for the original style that has the anti-dazzling feature in it? Maybe another car built by Rover, or MG, or any other that might have shared parts?? I like being able to see whats coming behind me but on long night journeys, it can be REALLY tiresome to have to dodge the super bright lights that cars now have...which all also happen to be mounted at eye-level.

On the MPI mirror, that gets glued to glass, yes. Not on the standard ones fitted in the standard manner/location....unless there is something I dont know.

1100 specials had it, as an option I think, so do exist. They are NLA so maybe in a scrapers or someone breaking on here.

Well, we all now how current Minis are...of course "all" cars had them but not Minis (aside from the Special) until the MPi cars. My 94 certainly does not. Also, the Minis mirror is much smaller then most other cars so retro fitting from from another car typically yields a MASSIVE mirror in comparison.

I guess I will have to keep my eyes out for one of those original ones. Being in the US, I certainly am not going to find one here:-) We barely have wreckers anymore here...at least near me. When I was young, I'd be at one at least once a month for parts for my VW's. All of my usual haunts are now closed down:-(

If you do, I would LOVE to buy it. Planning a trip across the whole of the USA and looking for anything to make things easier on the driver!
