Sometimes a good smack from a decent hammer is enough to get the collets out. This may well have happened in the past

Nope, valves have done only 12000 miles.

Yes its the head of valve stem ,3 exhausts.

it looks the top of the valve stem has been deformed (mushroomed) from the rocker tip hitting it but it's not clear - can you get a photo showing it from a side view

what do the rocker tips over those valves look like, and is there any evidence of the valves having contacted the pistons ?

what's the history on the engine itself ?  anything changed recently etc etc

Definitely mushroomed. Engine when I got the car had several components that didn't match up. Trying to get mot ,it was always to rich, carb needle had been filed flat down its taper , after much struggling and failures, took the head off .. The valves had been ground shorter by hand with angle grinder, as they had slipped and ground down stem on some of them.replaced with new valves and new carb ,distributer etc,and past mot.Has past another mot last November, but in last few months started to get breather problem.

well and truly abused from the looks of it and a grease monkey for a mechanic

wouldn't worry about the valve stems at the mo they can be cleaned up when taken out.

Hammer is definitely not the way to go

if you haven't a valve spring compressor a G cramp and socket with the side ground out so u can get to collets will do the job

Looks like you need to go through all the valves measure them up

not surprised it was running rich

sheesh theres some ******* about

cheaper option could be get another head

replacement valves and hours of labour could well outrun cost of another head

Found out why there's no breather on timing chain cover.
No chain but a timing belt.

If there's a belt fitted it may well be a performance build

Hi,

Looks like a full strip and rebuild then I'm afraid. Best thing to do now is get the bores measured at a machine shop and see if you need a rebore...

Cheers  :proud:
