"Eight celebrities join one of the world’s toughest classic car endurance rallies for a four-part TV series – airing from August 19 at 9pm on BBC2. Noel Edmonds, Martin Kemp and Tinchy Stryder are among those attempting to cover more than 3000km in 12 days, behind the wheel of such classics as a classic Mini, Morris Minor, Hillman Imp and MGB GT. An easy feat perhaps on tarmac but very different on the Road to Saigon."

The duos and classic vehicles are:

Noel Edmonds and his wife Liz in an MGB GT.
Martin Kemp (Spandau Ballet/Eastenders) and wife Shirlie Kemp (Wham!) in a 1972 Mini
Chef Andi Oliver and her daughter, TV presenter Miquita Oliver a 1959 Morris Minor
Tinchy Stryder and Jordan Stephens (Rizzle Kicks) in a 1967 Hillman Imp.

To be crowned champions each pair must work as a team, one as navigator and the other as driver. They must follow strict rally rules without the aid of satellite navigation and maintain a mantra for mechanical sympathy.

Looking forward to this, hopefully it's not too staged.

Read an article by Noel Edmonds criticising the show makers because most of the contestants finished in taxis - the mini apparently overturned on virtually the first corner!
Probably still worth watching but don't get your hopes up.

"Noel Edmonds has slammed the BBC for its 'deceptive' new rally show which featured celebrities who couldn't drive, five-star hotels and a wrap party in a suspected brothel."
BBC Two's Eight Go Rallying promised to show teams of celebrities racing across 2,500 miles throughThailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
But television presenter Noel Edmonds, who has a background in rally racing, said the programme was 'fictitious' and 'dishonest'.

Martin Kemp and his wife Shirlie rolled their Mini in the first few days of filming and were given a hire car....

I watched the first one and it promised to be quite good. I have the second one (last night) recorded to watch tonight. I did say to my wife at the beginning that out of all the cars the celebrities were given, the Mini was the one you'd take. I was obviously not taking into account putting into the hands of inexperience.

I also stated that putting two youths, that have zero mechanical understanding, in a Hillman Imp, in scorching temperatures...........was only going to end one way. Chances were, they'd overheat in 1972, sitting on the drive while you took the dog for a walk, in January! Silly choice really.

In a true rally (this one included I suspect had it been in the hands of one of the "real" teams), the screen aperture would have been bent roughly back into shape, a new screen sourced and glued / taped / put in and that Mini would have gone again. But obviously, 'elf and safety these days, will not allow TV production companies to let "precious" celebrities walk through a puddle let alone strap them into a bent Mini!

Not sure I'll bother with Ep2 now........

Like most TV series of this type today, it has turned out to be the usual dumbed down 'celebrity' rubbish......so like many I won't be watching any further episodes!

I don't believe that the producers couldn't source, locally, replacement cars that in some way reflected the spirit of the endurance event. To see them restarting the event in modern air conditioned cars was a bit naff.

Yes... it had potential.  And seeing any classics on TV is a good thing, right?  But this was not good.

It seems your average 'driver' nowadays has been so spoilt by idiot-proof modern vehicles, they're simply not up to adapting to classic vehicles.  With the exception of Noel Edmonds, who is a car buff, everyone else was out of their depth, at the cost of some lovely old cars that managed to survive decades of use by sympathetic owners, only to be ruined by z-list celebrities, all in the name of entertainment.

I cringed when smoke started pouring from the Imp (do they have a temperature gauge, I've never driven one..) and knew that lovely aluminium engine would be toast.  Likewise, when the Morris thou and Imp apparently couldn't go up a hill.  What?!  As for destroying that beautiful Mini... well, that's what happens when you force someone without the correct experience or training, out of their comfort zone.

Overall, an inevitable waste of taxpayer's money and cars.  Another all-expenses paid holiday for the poor long suffering celebrities, at our cost naturally.

I haven't seen episode 2, if it was totally different then I take it all back!

Yes they do have a temp gauge and the guy driving even spotted it was over on "H again". but carried on.

Judging by the sounds of the revs  I don't think any of the celebs knew you can drop down into first gear on really steep hills. Don't think the oil pressure gauge on the mini was even connected. Noel like the the rest of us jumped at the chance to drive a classic car around the far east but there should have been better vetting of the contestants.

Watched the 2nd episode last night. Was ok but the fact the Kemps are now in a Qashqai and the boys are in a Fabia, let the side down. But looking at the trailers, I don't think it stays like that.

The MG breakdown puzzled me a bit. They are on a rally with NO tools???? Yet they made a fan belt appear from nowhere.

I wish these production companies would think about the viewers that may have a little knowledge. It's obviously aimed at a certain audience.

As has been said, it had potential as a concept but failed to deliver - won't bother watching any more than the first half hour I saw
