Right so I’ve just about buttoned up the radiator flush I’ve been doing. Found loads of issues and fixed them all as I’ve gone but as I’ve tightened the thermostat housing bolts up the one was quiet tight, bolts not in best condition and it’s broke a bit off the head?

I guess as the bolts screwed in it’s compressed all the old crap down until it broke it off! On the list of issues that could go wrong this was something I’d never expected!

My question is will it be okay? The thermostat housing is tight so I’m guessing it won’t leak but don’t want a hole in the side of my engine?

Any suggestions ?

Nothing to worry about. Haven't you heard of "Gorilla Glue"

To be serious:

Quickly get some of that "Two part epoxy putty" before that cast iron rusts.

Clean out that crudd with water and a paint brush, dab it well dry.

Work two bit of the putty together, and with a little ball of tissue pushed up against the stud, plug the hole.

you can file it smoth tomorrow..

have you tested it with water under pressure ?

most of the damage is from the bottom of the bolt hole

I should imagine the fine crack will leak a bit , I would bolt it all up & try it under pressure

I have done the same on one of my engines , but without the crack , it was ok

if you do repair the crack , do it from inside , as on the outside it will be under pressure - but give some space for the thermostat

Are you thinking that that dead-end white wiggly mark is a crack?

Looks like a crack to me as well.

I had this when the previous owner had used bolts which were too long and when I removed the doubled up washers it pinged the corner off. Mine was minor so I reshaped it with chemical metal and it's fine.

I'd be tempted to try this with yours and see if it leaks under water pressure, or get it professionally tested, and go from there

Crack can be successfully brazed too.

It’s not cracked. It’s not leaking as there’s no fluid there it’s just a hole where the bolt screws into. I’ve ran the engine up to temp and even driven. No issues. Rust is my main worry and the condition of the head.

A new head is obviously a must now but don’t want to get into that until winter. I’ll look at putty as I think I’ve been really lucky not to crack the head.

On the plus side it’s a nice excuse to get an upgrade when I get round to it!

The light line that looks like a crack is the remains of an old paint job by the way not cracked

can't see a reason for a new head ,

but if you need an excuse for an upgrade

that head is only fit for the scrap bin  ;D

nudge nudge wink wink
