i recently bought an Aldon 45/59D yellow distributor with vac. when i first fitted it the car fired but was very rough and wouldn't run long enough to do anything.  after a few attempts at turning the dizzy it it stopped producing a spark. i checked the battery and it is fine as are all the connections.

Can someone please help with this as it is driving me mental.

P.S it has points and a condenser with a single wire going to the coil -ve.

Thank

hi

are you running a ballast ?

is coil ok & voltage correct

have points closed up

is condenser ok - new ones are common for failing

check nylon washer is stopping points shorting to base plate & condenser clip is the right way around , & can move & short points

check for resistance when points open & closed circuit when closed

short coil -ve to earth (on -ve earth car) with dizzi wire removed - do you get spark ?

I have now got a spark, there was a broken wire going to the coil so there was no power getting to it

Thanks anyway

I still cannot get the started, would someone be able to tell me how to static time it. It does sound like it wants to fire and it sometimes does but it is very rough and cuts out again, it is getting fuel because the plugs are wet.

firing order 1 3 4 2  anti clockwise from 1 o'clock position

static timing for a rough startup 6 degrees before TDC

if the engine kicks back against the starter or spitting thru carb it is too advanced - so turn dizzi ANTI clockwise a bit

if thudding thru exhaust it will be too retarded , so turn dizzi  clockwise

charge battery up before trying

best of luck

edit all the above for a basic a series setup , high performance setup may require different settings

edit corrected clockwise / anticlockwise  :ohno:

Turn dizzy clockwise to increase advance, anti-clock to retard.

Ive corrected it now -

rookie mistake - oops - suddenly my brain had the rotor arm going clockwise - don't know why  :shy:

Andrew,

With a points type distributor setting up the static timing is straightforward as long as you have the flywheel with 1/4 - 5 - 10 - 15 markings on the rim and the window with small removable cover plate in the 'wok' so you can see the flywheel rim position.

If you have this set-up then using a small 12v lamp between coil -ve and the distributor wire allows you to see exactly when the points are opening and set the static timing.
