Hi all,

Having a lot of issues getting my 1992 Cooper SPi starting after I worked abroad for a couple of years and left her garaged and unused.  The fuel pump stopped priming, so I replaced it and at the weekend replaced the fuel filter too. I added a gallon of fresh fuel and as I turned the key and primed the pump, I heard fuel gurgling into the filter, and then checked I had fuel getting through right to the entry point under the back of the air filter (checked by pulling off the pipe, plenty of fuel coming out)

Electrically, I have been through all of the inline fuses behind the air filter, replaced some of the inline holders which had melted at one end (and open circuited the contact to the fuse end).  All good soldered joints now.  I had lost my ignition and battery lights on turning the ignition key until I went through all those fuses and got them all good.  Now they lights are back and the engine turns over quickly.  I pulled out the spark plug nearest the offside (Number One Cylinder?) and held against the block as turning over, to see a nice regular spark.  The plug was dry despite a fair bit of turning over and repeat priming of the fuel pump over an hour or so.  So its looking like I have spark, but no fuel, though it is reaching the head at the back of the air filter (the inlet manifold)?

Any advise as to where to look next?  The car is low mileage, has been dry stored for the last 25 years and used infrequently, if that gives any clues!

Thanks in advance, hoping you can help awake the sleeping beauty so I can work on the other fairly minor points to the MoT (rear brakes binding, front disks and pads to replace etc...)

Ian

OK thanks, I'll check this out at the weekend, I'm expecting it to be electrical rather than a fuel problems now.  So the injector has its own secondary fuel pump or is it opened electrically by the engine management system?

Hi,

ItsI a solenoid valve, the pump in the tank provides the pressure, the injector is opened by the ECU to let the fuel into the engine.

Cheers  :proud:

Thanks Ivan, Bat,

OK, I've disconnected the plug to the injector and put a DVM on it.  I'm seeing about 20mV as I turn on the ignition and between 1.5 and 2.2V (varying randomly) on turning over the engine.  So if there were an inline fuse, it will be intact.  I dismounted the ECU and took both plugs off, sprayed with contact cleaner and reassembled, but no difference, still no fuel getting through.

I can't work out where the ECU power input is presented on one of the connectors, can anyone advise?  As I'm seeing a regular spark (removed plug on cylinder #1) though I would have thought the ECU has power OK.

The Haynes manual implies the injector  is supplied directly off the ECU rather than being fused.  Does the relay module play a part in this, that unit has four relays (starter relay, fuel pump relay, main relay, manifold PTC heater relay)?  I can rule out three of them I think.  Difficult from the Haynes manual to work out what the main relay does though it does appear to supply the fuel pump relay, but all of that side appears to be working OK now that I have renewed the fuel pump)

Sooo, if the ECU has power but is not supplying the injector with 12V, could it be duff?  O_O Or would a relay module swap be a better first swap out as would be less £££?

I took a photo of where I had connected but can't see how to attach an image to the post?

Thanks,

Ian

Hi,

give some current to the injector, you will hear it clicking and some gas should spray out.If it clicks but no gas is coming out, i think the preassure regulator of the TBI has a fault.
