No 40 years old it has to be. It's a 40 year rolling exemption. So you've got another 6 years to go

No

Cars qualify for tax exemption if they were built 40 or more years before 1st January. However, you cannot apply for exemption until the 1st April in the qualifying year. Therefore, a car must be a minimum of 40 years and 3 months old before you can apply for exemption.

Hi,

A Google search for "DVLA tax exempt" gives...

Historic vehicles

Vehicles made before 1 January 1978 are exempt from 1 April 2018.

Cheers   :proud:

I may be nitpicking (..or just wrong..), but wouldn't it be based on the date of registration rather than manufacture date ?

Not if you can prove to the DVLA the date of manufacture.....as some cars sat in Dealer showrooms and were registered long after leaving the factory.

When BL were struggling in the late 70's and 80's they rented fields where they just parked the excess production, did not see that many mini's but you could see 100's of Rover SD1's and the likes just sitting brand new and unregistered.

Do you need to change the logbook to historic vehicle before you get tax exemption? My mini is a 79.

My vanden Plas 1500 was 4 months from build date in June 78 in longbridge to dispatch dealer nov 78, date of first registration March 79. Definitely want it to be based on date of manufacture.

Ok
It says it was first registered 17th January 1979.
Is there a way to find out when it was built?
And if it's before January 79 am I right I thinking I can claim for tax exemption 1st of April?

Check your logbook, also there may well be a few date tags on some parts
