Ok
It says it was first registered 17th January 1979.
Is there a way to find out when it was built?
And if it's before January 79 am I right I thinking I can claim for tax exemption 1st of April?

Apply here for a certificate from BMH which should give your build date:-

Mini 1959-69 - ADO 15 versions - Austin, Morris, Mini Cooper

Mini 1977-1981 - ADO 20 versions badged Mini (Longbridge build only not Seneffe)

£43 for a heritage certificate now! Wow

This might be a silly question, but why is there no records between 1970 and 1976 for the Mini?

Q. Why can't you produce a Heritage Certificate for Minis built between 1969 and 1977?

Unfortunately the factory records kept between 1969 and 1977 are inconsistent and in some instances there is not sufficient information for us to produce a full Heritage Certificate. Where this is the case we can offer a Dating Letter, which shows the chassis number and a build date, as an alternative. If you have a Mini which falls in this period, place your order for a Heritage Certificate as normal and if we can only offer you a Dating Letter, then the difference in price will be refunded. If you specifically require a Heritage Certificate for tax exemption purposes regardless of the amount of detail recorded (since the official licensing or registration authorities will not accept Dating Letters) then please state this on your order form under ‘comments’.

I think you might of missed out as it would need to of been built December 78 or before.
That's how I understand it now anyway.

Yes there is an exemption from MOT at 40 years old, only if not heavily modified

https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles

It is not automatic, as soon as the vehicle is 40 years old, you can't apply online, you have to tax it at post office with the V112 form.

Had a quick read through, mine should be ok, but still 5 years to go

I dont think thats 100% correct ...or I might be reading it wrong.

To get the MOT exemption you just click a box on the .GOV website ..no need to go to the post office.

Interestingly if you check the reg after you have done it the .GOV website says that the MOT has expired and warns you of a possible fine ...if you look lower down the page it then states it might be MOT exempt as a classic.

Ok, when I last checked, I was told you had to fill in the V112 form at the post office!

To be honest I'd just get an MOT anyway. I can imagine insurance companies not liking the fact you don't have an MOT if there's an accident.
I'd definitely check with them before hand anyway!

Ok so I got my heritage certificate and my clubby was built October 78. Happy days!
Now do I go to the post office with my logbook and certificate to get it sent off and changed? Would as copy of the certificate be ok? Or would they need the original? Just don't want to lose it if that makes sense?

Check with the DVLA, but I'm sure a good colour copy would be fine

How long does it normally take to get the log book back from DVLA after you've sent it to be changed to historic tax class?

I sent it off on the 7th May recorded delivery.

Cheers
Josh
