So i thought id try my valve clearances at 16 thou as opposed to 15 thou on Mr Swifts advice to try something out,  and mother of god, mr mini did not like that one bit!

Ran like a throbby sort of rhythm at the exhaust and popped and banged with any acceleration.

put it back to 15 thou and its smooth as you like.

Took the plugs out to reset them and they were black as the devils nut sack after the 16 thou incident which we will call "operation never again" - cleaned them up and back to normal.

what the frig is that all about? some sort of combustion issue?

also, right, if you are doing your valve clearances and turn the engine back a tad to get the right lift if you over shoot slightly - will this bugger it on ignition? make it run crap?

Also, a funny moment - left my feeler gauge on the rad bracket, forgot about it, started the car, feeler goes in the fan, and the fan loses an inch off one of the blades and the feeler gauge looks like a cartoon cigar thats exploded.

I am now going to stay in the house and read my haynes for a bit.

So now you need a new fan and a new set of feeler gauges?.
It is unlikely that one additional thou clearance will make any difference to the running.
I always set my valves to 0.012".

what i need Mr Cooperman is to stop messing around and engage my brain.

Unfortunately the fan will have to wait until pay day end of the month - new rad too as the fins are dented now.

Its old now anyway.

thinking of a two core - what do you think? with a 6 blade steel fan.

I remember your saying 12 thou before, the trouble is with the swiftune sw5 its 15 thou - 1:5 rockers you see.

im worried setting to 12 thou will bugger everything up again

Hi Happydude,

I have an SW5 fitted to my 1293 A+ engine with 1.5 roller tip rockers, I set my valve clearances to 16 thou and it runs like a dream. 15 to 16 thou should make no difference at all to your engines running.

Cheers, Steve.

All you can do is reset the valve clearances and double check them once done. Are you using the "rule of nine" method to set them?

Cheers, Steve.

yeah rule of 9 - its running fine now - cannot account for the misfiring and blackened plugs at 16 thou. really really weird. never done it before and its ok now

1 thou shouldn't make any difference to engine performance.

I have a Fletcher alloy radiator in my estate, it was an easy installation. The issue you may have is getting the cowl bolts to come out the radiator. Most alloy radiators are metric threads

I never run anything other than a standard radiator, even in my full-spec rally S.
With a 6 blade fan it is never a problem, although I do have an under-wing aux fax for rallying in very hot weather but hardly ever use it.

I dont suppose you removed the plugs when setting the clearances to make rotation easier? You may have accidentally put a lead back on the wrong cylinder!

nah, definitely didn't, they are in a bracket 1-4 cant do it wrong.

however......your addressing a man who dropped his feeler gauge into the fan yesterday....so maybe.
