Have great difficulty getting into any forward gear when stationary.  Reverse slips in easily.  Had new clutch and thrust bearing fitted by a local, highly regarded garage that specialises in older cars.

Have tried every technique I know from 40 years of Minis!  I also have a '65 Moke which is a dream to drive!

Clubman has been extensively modified during a rebuild about 5 years ago and gears were then fine.

Any thoughts please?

I've come across them where they are stiff to get in to any gear and it's usually a bent or badly aligned shift rod for the shifter itself.

However, given you can select Reverse OK and assuming it's the original Gearbox, about the only thing I can think of is a bent Selector Shaft (the one that's common for 1st through to 4th gears), it is inside the bowels of the gearbox;-

If the gearbox has been swapped out or overhauled at some point, it may have been fitted with a late model Reverse Gear, which are fitted with Bushes that can 'walk out'. When that happens, you can select gears OK, but moving across (left - right) the Neutral Gate, the Shifter gets very stiff.

I'd suggest knocking out a Roll Pin from the Coupling at the back of the Gearbox on the Shift Input and try to select gears from here first, just to rule out the Shifter or anything external first.

I have an issue with my estate where it won't go into first or second (only when cold) unless I have a few tries between the 1st and 2nd gears, it recently had a gear selector anti leak kit installed and I suspect the rubber boot needs cut shorter or removed entirely.

Personally as you had a clutch fitted recently I'd let them try to adjust the clutch throwout nuts then go from there.

firstly were the gears ok before the clutch change ?

if yes it could be the clutch dragging slightly / faulty clutch plate / incorrect adjustment

if the fault was before the clutch change -

& If you can't select forward gears when the engine is off ...

it is possible that the reverse gear bush has moved & is holding the car in reverse slightly - not engaging gear , but enough to stop other gears selecting

I had it on a mini a few years ago , gearbox needed a strip down sadly

I would go thru all other possible problems before checking for this

check things like the roll pin coming loose , as above - the gear selector shaft boot fouling the selector shaft joiner tube etc

also check the gear stick pivot box for wear / something fouling the shaft , even the reverse lift gate on the plate on the bottom of the pivot box (spot welds break)

best of luck

Many thanks for these thoughts.  Now will go back to the garage.... It was because of difficult gear selection that the new clutch was fitted...

If it goes in with engine off its clutch, if it doesn't go in its either the linkage or internal
