As said above a 1/2 drive is fine. I would get a halfords professional one, great quality for the price and lifetime guarantee and you'll wonder why you never had one before.

If you're going to be building an engine then a stand is handy, if not then a crane is a lot more useful. I Made my own adaptor plate for my engine stand and was pretty simple to make.

Alex - are you talking about the 900mm breaker bar or the 30mm socket?

Oh whoops, Breaker bar >_<. I think mine was about £20 or maybe less with a trade card.

Can't find any long ones?

Just looked and can't see them either. I would have thought they still do them though.

OK back to Flywheel Pullers :-)

I probably have about three Flywheels to pull off. 2 x Metro 1275's not been running for 15+ years :-) and my 998 Mini which is started and driven weekly.

The cheap Laser one or MinSpares may work but don't want to buy one and have it fail only to have to buy a better one. The GuessWorks one is £90 which is a little too costly for just three jobs. I have spoken to John at GuessWorks ref a rental but he normally needs it back in a couple of weeks - problem is I will be doing all three over about three months as I don't have the space to do them all at the same time :-(

Has anyone used the MinSport version:

https://trade.minisp...uller-tool.html

It is advertised as heavy duty but just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with it?

I suppose I could buy the GuessWorks one and sell it on? Or even rent it out :-)

Many thanks

As much as I hate minisport, I have this model and pulled countless flywheels off. Dont know if mine cones from minisport, but looks identical.

Lay the round shaft of a 3/8" or 5/16" screwdriver in the teeth.

To "break" the big 1 1/2" bolt in the end of the crank,  knock the square drive through and put the socket on the other side;  then set your Torque Wrench at about 130 lbs and keep heaving on it with 150 lb so that it keeps giving way, and acts as an impact wrench.

Check the position of the screwdriver shaft before each heave.

Aka how to destroy a torque wrench.

Really? You are actually recommending the guy to abuse a calibrated precision tool?

Even I’m not that daft. A Torque Wrench is for doing up not undoing
But what about locking up the Flywheel. And the order? Just watched Bill Solis video again, he removed the Starter Motor, then removes the Crack Pulley, Water Pump and Timing Gears and then returns to the other side to do the Flywheel and Clutch.

That would probably work OK - anything that can sit in between two teeth and then jamb against the housing.
An old, decent sized screwdriver or pry bar works.

Yes - it is much easier to remove the bottom pulley and slacken the camshaft nut whilst you have the flywheel on to lock the engine up.
If you don’t then you’d need to stop the crank turning once the gearbox was off (a bit of 3x2 between crank and block wall).

If using a screwdriver or pry bar (as I do), get someone to hold it whilst you do up, or undo the bolt. You can go flying if it pops out whilst exerting maximum force.

I know this from experience......

Does that sound like

*Rattle of gun*
Slipped screwdriver followed by four letter tirades?

I feel your pain lol
