Evening all excuse my ignorance but when fitting the front wheel bearing, the races are tight and will not move but the actual roller bearings and spacer seem to be loose in the hub as if they are pushed together when they're tensioned. Is this the case or should they be tight fitting against the race? Thanks in advance, Babs

Tapered roller bearings are "floppy", in the race, unlike a ball race or a roller race where there is no lateral movement.

Tapers have to be used in back to back pairs with a specific spacer between them.  A ball race or roller race can be used on its own in many applications.
