While my engines out again I'm thinking of replacing my conventional needle roller idler with the with the internal roller bearing type. Can't seem to find any info as to how to set these up and whether they need to be shimmed or not.
Any one using them?

They don't need shimming for end float but set backlash between idler and primary due to various thickness engine to gearbox gaskets.

Have seen this setting of backlash mentioned a couple of times now, but how do you set it? I thought it was fixed, or are you saying you need to measure up different gaskets?

Lash between bottom input gear and idler are set to correct measurement by the pitch of the teeth, measure that, then set the primary/idler lash the same by using correct thickness gasket to achieve it.
