Hey guys!

Unfortunately my little Italian mini wont be able to pass its "Pickerl" (MOT equivalent in Austria) with an open style cone filter - unless I get someone to give it a technical examination blabla costing me a few hundred... So im stuck with getting a stock filter box and upgraded K&N filter, but Im wondering what else will need to be done to the car?
Im going to borrow a standard box+filter to pass the tests - or not get any problems, and then I will have to find a used airbox and filter to install.

Would I need to change needle/bring to rolling road to tune or would it be fine with the whole setup its running now? Currently a stage one kit from minispares - its a 1990 Carbed 998 mayfair. (Ive read up on Calver STs site about the standard box and k&n + holes giving more power, so Im guessing more airflow, and hence some sorta needle change??)

Any tips would be sweet!
Also, if anyone is selling, hit me up as im looking for an air box+filter ;)

If you have a standard Minispares stage 1 kit, you should have AAU needle in the carb?

This should be fine with a standard airbox and K&N filter. It's probably running slightly lean at the moment.

With a cone filter it would probably need something richer like AAM.

If you need it totally standard you need the following parts:

An air filter housing:  https://www.ebay.co....tm/173464311539

And an elbow:  https://www.ebay.co....tm/401580603917

And the wing nut bolts:  https://www.ebay.co....tm/123306703967

Plus washers for bolts:  http://www.minispare...ck to catalogue

and:  http://www.minispare...36.aspx|Back to

Also:  https://www.ebay.co....tm/232570369728

and:  http://www.minispare...ck to catalogue

The Ebay ones are from UK so you'd have to contact the sellers to see if they'd send to Austria.

A rolling road tune is always a good idea.

Don't you replace the air filter and check your barometer at least once a day to change the needle accordingly, and keep changing it when ascending mountains? Lol

If you have the spare cash, there is seldom any harm in doing a rolling road tune up, but the principal of an SU carburettor, maintains a good fuel / air mixture whether the filter is getting dirty or is removed, So I wouldn't rush to change the needle.

I wish I knew :P The italian seller said "yes, ehhhh stege juan kit it have. ehhh minispares kit yes"  so yea thats my current knowledge :P i know it has a heated inlet manifold and a cone (not K&N) filter on it, so probably with the proper needle aswell. Ill take a look this weekend at the plugs to see what colour they are! So basically if i swap back, it should be fine? no needle swap etc...
As said above, no idea if it currently has an AAM or AAU needle :/

ah sweet thanks for that! AFAIK it doesnt need to be 100% original or w.e, just as long as the filter is in a black plastic box they should let it through! Wont be needing the hot-air intake etc :) just box and filter element :) good tip on theelbow etc. Not sure if they are the same as the one I have on now so ill double check that first :)

yea just wondering if the mixture would end up thinning out too much or w.e. No technical experience in this field... just got my first mini 3 weeks ago :D all a learning-cycle! Im thinking for the test it should be fine, but afterwards ill get it to a RR to have it setup properly :)

The letters for the needle will be stamped into it.  It's easy to remove to check.

I'm pretty sure I've got an airbox, elbow etc available. Will have a check as soon as I get a chance (in the next couple of days) and PM you.

Well that went bad...

Had my MOT equivalent yesterday. Mini was running perfectly the day before until i threw the original filter on. CO value of 7.2 - 3.5 is max allowed, and he wasnt idling very well. After 1hr of driving back and forth to the test area, my mini started to stutter and misfire/not fire at all, and was spitting some smoke out - which I never had before, even on colder morning starts.. Never experienced this before so I cracked open the spark plugs and saw it was completely black...

Had a chat with a guy and he said it must be because of the swapped filter letting in less air than the cone, causing impartial burns and hence clogging up the sparks...and probably the cause of the bad CO values going out the back.

I guess something needs to be tuned/set up correctly when swapping air filters!
About the blacked up sparkplugs... just give them a wipe and it should be fine or is there more to do?

A copper wire brush and some clean petrol will clean the plugs off.

Have you adjusted the mixture?

Ok will try that this weekend

No i didnt. I had asked above if anyone had any tips/infos when swapping the filter, but no one spoke about adjusting the mixture :/ I had a feeling it might be off, but not to the degree that my car doesnt want to start and i have to push to 2000rpm to keep it running steady :/

The cone filter will let more air in so it will now be running very rich ... hence black plugs. You need less fuel with standard filter and more with cone

You need to weaken the mixture by adjusting the big nut under the Su, you'll probably need to increase the idle a bit then the mixture a bit at a time to keep it running, read up on adjusting an SU.

If it's still too rich with the mixture set as weak as possible then you'll need a different needle.
