1994 SPi Mayfair

Right folks, a few weeks ago I purchased off Ebay, an MGB GT 1800 dashboard. Its got 110MPH Speedo head, Rev counter, oil pressure gauge, water temp gauge and fuel gauge, Iv got other gauges. I bought it because I want a retro looking dashboard in me Mini - eventually.

So bought a capilliary fitting kit for the oil pressure gauge, the rev counter and all the other gauges just plug in.

The speedo head is causing a few problems. I was in touch with a company about buying the correct cable for the speedo head, as I ordered the wrong type for the speedo I have, so eventually after a few messages etc... they basically turned round and said they dont have it in stock....(They dont want to take the chance on me slating them for supplying the wrong cable and dont have the balls to say it, just that they dont have it in stock) Now I know the speedo cable probably wont fit the Mini gearbox - Im well aware of that, but thats my problem - I just want a speedo cable that will fit the speedo head....

Has anyone else had this problem....?

Any help or suggestions most welcome, but please dont say it cant be done - because it probably can..

How....?

Its a square drive as the Mini speedo drive is, but is smaller than the Mini's and has a screw connection instead of bayonet to keep it in place.

I can upload pics if I can work out how to do it since Photobucket started to charge....

The speedo is from a '78 1800 MGB GT I beilieve...

I had a look on ebay (sorry I don't know how to upload pictures either to show you) but there is an MGB cable that looks the same as a mini centre speedo cable. Screw fitting at the speedo end and looks the same fitting as a mini for the gearbox end.

BL/BMC/AustinMorris/ARG/whatever they were called on the day typical parts sharing

You mention bayonet fitting - sounds like you are tying to use a later model cable (from a mini with line of sight gauges)

What did you ask for?

By the way a mini centre speedo cable is too short to put the speedo in front of you - I use an Austin Maxi cable for my speedo which is line-of-sight and further out from the bulkhead in a custom dash

The MGB one looks quite long/too long  as it has to go to a rear drive gearbox I suppose - the maxi (transverse) cable is a teensy bit too long but manageable

Ah I stand corrected  - according to Mr Google so i make no claims as to how correct this might be - the MGB AND Maxi cables are both the same at 39 inches vs the mini centre speedo cable of 26 inches

You don't say which company you are dealing with, but speedy cables should be able to make you up a cable of any length and ends.

The company I was dealing with, which turned out to be a waste of time to be honest was MGB Hive on Ebay.

Iv got the top cable in the 2 pics above, neither end fits the speedo head I have, the centre drive doesn't fit the speedo head at all.... They did however recommend a type that would fit the speedo head but couldn't guarantee it would fit the gearbox end - which I know it would probably need pursuading to fit....

I'll give the ones in the link a try to see if they can sort me a cable drive for the speedo.

Who'd have thought this would be such a hard thing to do....

It's unlikely that the tachometer will work as you have electronic ignition. The MGB tach is probably an RVI type with a cable loop on the back and you need an RVC which only uses a female bullet connector and an earth. Tachos can be converted though with a special circuit board.
