First Time I Have Seen All 3 Lower Steadies Fitted.

3rd lower steady will be the original one fitted from the clutch side of the gearbox forward to the subframe.

Interesting, I don't think our local Minis had them fitted. Do you have a picture of how it is attached? 

 

it attaches to the bracket as seen front left in this picture.

it was from 1990 on.

Thank you! That explains it. Since Mini production stopped locally in 1983.

Always used 'normal' nuts and locking washers on exhaust clamps, as NyLocks would melt with the heat.....

I don't think this nylocks would be used by nick, he isn't that stupid ;). Most likely they are the nuts with the built in spring at the top that look similar to nylocks. Unless this isn't nicks car!

Apologies for resurrecting an older thread.

 

I want to fit a lower gearbox steady as I think it will improve engine movement. Only have the standard upper one at the moment plus the ultimate steady on the thermostat.

 

Which of the 3 lower steadies is the best to fit? i.e. most effective at stopping movement?

 

Don't think I have an issue drilling the sub-frame to install the bolt if that's required. Can the steady bracket be fitted to the gearbox OK with the engine still in? Risk of oil leak etc undoing the gearbox bolts etc?

personally the the two rear mounted ones. but they do little to stop engine movement. they do more to hold the engine in place by reducing the sheer loads on the rubber mounts.

 

the two top steadies should really be enough.

So your saying if you have a hot engine the rubber engine mounts might not be up to it and you might need the extra support of the bottom steadies?

I have the standard upper steady fitted. Extra steady on opposite side from water pump to bulkhead. Two rear steadys from box to back of subby. And the one from box to the front of the subby.
I've done this as I have a fairly powerful turbo engine and internal gear linkage fitted. It never pops out of gear so the steadys work!

The engine mounts do a decent job of taking the weight, using the shape of the subby to wedge them in compression. However, accelerating hard lifts the engine as it tries to rotate counter to wheels in reaction. A steady bar that's close to tangential to the driveshafts is best if it has pivots at both ends. Out of the 3 the rear ones do that better.
