Does it ever loose more than a pint?

How big is your expansion tank?

I would say i loose 1 litre at most. The expansion tank is made from one of those posh VOSS water bottles.

Without the expansion tank, the cooling system in metric is only about 3.5 litres, so you are loosing around 25%, which is enough uncover parts of the head and in its self, let the water boil, unless it is being well pumped round, so that doesn't point to pump failure.

I thought that Voss bottles were glass.  How have you sealed it, or are you only using it as a catch tank, not a pressurised expansion tank?.

Do you start with the catch tank empty, and if so, how much water is in it after your 30 mile run?

The bottle is more of a catch can.

I started with empty bottle. Got to Brighton and was half full.

At Brighton I filled the radiator back up and left the catch can half full.

Got home and the bottle was full to the point it was pouring out.

Here is  a pic of it now.  There is about 2cm of fluid which is just from driving around town yesterday.

you are not filling the rad are you?

should only be to about 1" above the core so there is some air for expansion.

Please can you remove the radiator cap, place it upside down and photograph it so that we can see the seal

Well the seal looks ok, and as you are catching the water, it isn't leaking out somewhere, so I'm baffled.

ok a little low as it should be to the top of the bar (rare to seem them now) I would go for a good old chemical cleaner in the coolant to give the whole system a sort out.

None if this explains why about 1 litre of water, and only 1 litre,  is being expelled into the catch tank.

This is far more than can be accounted for by the mere expansion of the water due to heat, not 25%, and at that rate there ought to be a feed-back as more water is lost, things get hotter, driving off more water.

JCMini-

just a couple of pictures of my engine block, showing how the rust can build up in the water jacket.

Core plugs removed, showing the accumulation-

And then after lots of rodding and flushing through with a hose pipe (viewed through the water pump area)-

I didn't run the engine in this condition but I'm sure it would have run hot...

As Boycie, Nick and myself have said here, clean out the cooling jacket before going any further.

Next to poor states of tune, this would be be about the next biggest cause of running hot and over heating that I see with most of these cars.

1/2" of rusted steel plate has around the same heat transfer capability as 6 to 8" of clean, non-rusted plate. On top of the poor thermal conductivity, chunks of rust will flake off and block the tubes in the radiator.

Give it all a proper and thorough cleaning, then go from there.

Thanks for the advice. Just reading around the forum for coolant flush.

CLR comes up quite a lot. Is this still the latest product to use and whats the best method to use it?

Cheers
