Hello all!

Does anyone have a fool proof way of telling if a car has oversills in it?
I’m selling one of mine & 2 separate people have questioned whether it has oversills from the photos.
I didn’t think they were, but now I’m beginning to wonder!

Cheers

I’ll try to get some later.

So basically feel the vents & see if they have holes?

Oversills:- The six vent shapes are just pressed 'bumps' with no opening at the back to allow water to drain out. Also inbetween the six vent shapes on oversills there is usually an extra thin pressed rib shape as seen in the Minispares oversill link above. These extra horizontal stiffening ribs are not seen on genuine sills and are probably added to compensate for using a thinner gauge (thickness) steel.

Sadly it was too dark to get proper photos.

The vents are open at the back for drainage, however they also have the extra ribs between them...........

They may therefore be narrower 'pattern' sills but not the wider full oversills......if the narrower pattern sills have been fitted properly with open vents for venting/drainage that is ok, however if these have been welded over the top of the original rusted sills the problem is nearly as bad as full unvented wide oversills.......

to be honest the rest of the bodywork has been done really well.
I was surprised that they could have used oversills.
So I suspect it has been done properly.

Exactly: there are some cars which look fantastic out there & may have been done really well on the whole, but which nonetheless have oversills...maybe because the owner/garage didn't know any different, or because they believed that a bigger sill was better, or because they believed that the open vents on the proper sills cause rust. (Or because the garage has done a bodged job). A car with oversills is definitely best avoided.

If buying a Mini and you find it has oversills, you simply point this out and tell the vendor that you will buy the car, but at a price reduction to cover the correction of the oversills issue. That is deduct the cost of a full sill repair.

As a guide, M-Machine do a complete inner and outer sill sub-assembly which, IMHO, is superb. It has the jacking point, some floor, correct welds and it fits. I believe they are about £75 each (the last ones I bought were just under that about 3 years ago). Then allow about 6 hours per side for fitting and welding plus the cost of painting. So oversills should reduce the price paid by around £750. If you can do the work yourself you could deduct a bit less, but why should you?

If the vendor won't budge this much, then walk away. Much grief can be hidden by those horrible oversills.
