Hi, New to the forum so here's my story - currently restoring a 1977 1275GT and maintaining my daughters daily driver - a 1997 MPI Cooper. Having some running rich issues with the MPI. Need some help! Started off with low idle issues and more recently after a local garage attempted a fix, it is now running rough/ lacks power. Has just failed its MOT on emissions and is quite obviously running rich. Smells of fuel and all plugs are sooty. I've carried out the following with absolutely no change:
1. New idle air control valve
2. New O2 lambda
3. New coolant sensor
4. New air temp sensor
5. New MAP sensor
6. New crankcase position sensor
7. New Camshaft position sensor
8. New plugs and HT leads
9. New throttle position potentiometer
Also removed fuel injectors and operated into jam jars - a bit crude but spray pattern looks ok.
Should probably accessed a diagnostic Sykes Pikavant ACR 4 a long time ago but can't find anyone with one near me so currently got my eye on eBay. Appreciate any thoughts before I drive it off a cliff :)

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

Out of interest, what part of the emissions test did it fail on? Has the car had a different exhaust? Different CAT or a bypass? Sometimes its the simple things that make the biggest difference on those mpi's.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay, It failed on high Co - 11% and 6267 hydrocarbons! Massive over fueling. The exhaust is standard and all original. Took the car to Somerford Minis today to run the rover diagnostics tool. Came up with loads of sensor faults - all of which I've changed. MechNic suspects a wiring issue and to be fair I have had to sort a couple of chaffing issues lately. He suggested a new engine loom which is currently unavailable and if it was it would be in the £400 region! Other alternative is to remove the loom and lay it out on the bench and inspect/ repair. Guess that's my next step, I'll keep you posted. He did say he's had leaking fuel injectors on mpi' before, but as all the plugs are sooty I tend to discount this. Could also be the ecu, but next step will probably be the wiring. Appreciate your thoughts though, I did wonder if the cat could be blocked. So if the wiring checks out that could be an option- although in a way it's slightly comforting to find faults on the electronic front.
