Mini Wont Start But Will Run W/bump

electrical

Best Answer cal844 , 09 October 2018 - 08:26 PM

Test for power at the white/red on the solenoid (if not it will be the ignition switch)

If there is power on the above then check that the solenoid is earthed to the inner wing(clean, shiny metal on the solenoid and wing) then check the boot floor to battery terminal earth Go to the full post

hi all

First experence on a mini forum, hope these are still active ha

Ive had my 'mk3 1971 mini' 6yrs now and fixed everything myself (with help from youtube and haynes ha). but this one has stumped me!?

ignition light comes on but she wont start!? ive replaced the starter solenoid, checked all cabels n connectors are secure, headlights are full power (which i assume shows battery isnt dead/dying)

it has electronic 'points'!?

when i turn the key there are no clicks or sounds!?

but will run with a bump/push start!?

any ideas

thanks

Is it a pre engaged or inertia starter? (Is the solenoid on the starter or inner wing)

I'd say the starter solenoid is shot

Assuming battery is OK?

Check the earth straps from engine to bulkhead. That's the negative connection for the starter motor and solenoid. If resistance is too high due to corrosion it will not turn over.

Check that when you turn the key to the start position, you are getting power to the Solenoid on the White / Red wire.

If yes, then solenoid, if no, then possibly the ignition switch.

If you ever have starting issues check that the solenoid is earthed. A friend and I have both had rust build up between the solenoid and inner wing.

A good clean with 40 or 80 grit sandpaper until shiny, then I give the cleaned areas a clean with brake clean or degreaser to remove the dust

That is an interesting piece of information and something i did not know. I will have to look at mine before i try starting it as the last owner said he could not get it to run
