Yes and that's to what I referred to in my post ^^.
It was used on the very early models, prior to using the half moon plug.

Here's part of the page from the Parts Book relating specifically to the 66 Cooper S:-
The item that you've referred to, P/N 22A1373 wasn't fitted in these, they were using instead of the half moon type plugs in the much earlier shifters.

Thank you for your help, but its not the plug is the metal plate under the fork and behind the plug. Wish I knew how to post a picture....
all i found was this NLA rubber from the earlier remotes.
