There is a 1964 VW Beetle for sale which has never been driven on the road and has only 23 miles on the clock which is factory and delivery mileage. Asking price is $1,000,000.

You could buy over 25 Mk.1 Cooper 'S's for that all in mint condition.

Still, it must be absolutely unique. Guess it's destined for a museum or a private collection.

The thing is thought it wouldn't be much good to anyone as you can't really use it.

There used to be a guy in our local club with a really low mileage mini pickup, he used to drive it to shows all over the place and it never gained any miles because he disconnected the speedo cable!

Welcome to the world of cars as investments!  I, too, think a car of that value is utterly useless because you'll never be able to do anything with it; the minute you start using the thing, it'll wipe out all of its value...

Mind you, I always thought that era of 'Bug' had lethal handling and hopeless engines, so you wouldn't be missing anything!

In 1966 I wanted to replace my 1964 Cooper 998. I didn't want another Mini as my road car because they always did need a lot of care & attention.

I worked with a guy who had a 1963 Beetle and it did seem very reliable, so i visited the local VW dealer and asked for a test drive in the then-new VW 1300. It seemed very well built and solid, but it was quite simply very slow. The road-holding was not bad and the handling was acceptable, but it just didn't GO. Maximum speed was the same as the cruising speed which was about 75 mph. There were improvements available such as the Okrasa kit, but I didn't want the bother.

In the end I bought a brand new Cortina GT which I loved driving. In those days I did a huge mileage of around 30,000 miles per annum.

The Beetle was a good car so long as you were seeking reliability and not any sort of modern performance.

Probably won't even be bought as an investment piece really.

The sort of person that can lay out a million bucks for a Beetle probably won't care too much about the value, they'll stick it on a plinth in their private collection and show it to the occasional guest, or lend it to a museum.

Dreamland !! I have owned a couple, the bottom fell out of the beetle market in the 90's.

Did a couple of run to the sun's to newquay in the 90's - not that I can remember much of them ;-)

Just like my first car which was a used 1964 beetle! It had no brakes, rust everywhere, where it looked "good" it was all body filler and the rear bumper right side support was held in place with a piece of wooden broom handle. The engine was good though. I spent my high school years working on it to get it ready for use when I went to college. But it lasted only one year in college. It had gotten so rusty that the engine exhaust was supporting the back end of the body.

I’d say they are trying that price to see if VW stump up for it. It’s not worth even near that to anyone else collector or museum.
