So I got in touch with the Penrite Malaysia chaps. They carry both the Classic Lite 20w-60 as well as the one supposedly formulated for the Mini, Classic Mini 20w-50.

Though the special Mini one is double the price of the Classic Lite (around 38 quid vs 19 for the Classic Lite, multiplied 5.5x in Malaysian Ringgit).

Unfortunately Valvoline VR-1 20w-50 isn't available here. Valvoline doesn't carry it. They do have XLD 20w-50, and the price is comparable to the Penrite Classic Lite.

I wonder which is preferable?

I also use the Penrite HPR30. Overall I get about 10psi additional oil pressure over the last oil I tried, and when the engine is hot due to the outside temp it's thicker and gives better oil pressure then a 20W-50

Another HPR30 user here, and cannot recommend it enough. Have used it in both my old Rover V8 with flat tappet cam, and my Mini and both are very happy with it.

HPR is advertised as having 1600ppm of zinc and "no friction modifiers". I wonder if thats really better than the classic lite which is also 20w-60?

1600 ppm zinc will be the ideal number and it is exactly what you need.
