Been chasing a fault on my indicators for a while and have now noticed the main wiring from my alternator has melted! I think it is time for a new loom but haven’t got the time/expertise to fit this myself. Does anyone know someone near Ely who could fit a new main loom for me?

Just replace the section of wire affected and give all other connections a clean

Thanks to both for the advice. I peeled away the melted insulation and only the 2 short wires from alternator to starter had fried so I reckon I can replace those and fit a new connector at the alternator. I’ve got a short (to ground) in the LH indicator signal wire which I think is the root cause that I need to fix first. Have isolated every component from the Green/Red indicator wire except the rear lamp unit. I need to move the fuel tank out of the way for access to the lamp unit so will do that next.

Hi,

Have you disconnected the green red at the engine bay where the rear loom connects?

It would prove that's where the problem is before you pull the tank out.

Cheers  :proud:

Didn’t know the rear loom was via a connector in engine bay (thought it was all one piece loom). Whereabouts is this connector please?

Hi,

Depends on the age of the car!

Older cars have a clump of bullet connectors by the wiper motor, you can disconnect each wire individually.

Injection cars have the plug in the passenger side of the car behind dash right in the corner by the bulkhead.

I'm not sure of the changeover point or if there was something else in between...

Cheers  :proud:

It's the last of the Carbs (1992 City E) but just before the SPI came out.  I haven't noticed any bullet connectors by the wiper motor (just 4 in line fuses) but I'll have a look around later tonight and try to get behind the dash as well.

Your car will have the connector on the lower dash rail support at the passenger (left side), also the wiring will run along the floor and up the wheel arch area

Found a bunch of connectors tucked in near the wiper motor where Bat said and the connector on the indicator wire (Green/Red) showed signs of melting (due to the short circuit drawing a pooload of current through the cable). The insulation on the wire itself looks fine. Have now proved the short is between that connection point and the rear lamp unit so I guess it’s fuel tank out next so I can get to the root of the problem

So I removed the fuel tank at the weekend and found the section of loom with a short between the indicator signal and earth.  Repaired that so now just need to refit the tank, replace the damaged alternator wiring and, hopefully, will soon be back on the road.  Thanks to all for your help and advice.
