turbocharging my 1988 998cc with GT1752 turbo charger and fusion fabs manifold set, can I use the distributor and ECU from metro turbo?

 

I understand I can modify my existing carb but am I better using the turbo carb, if so why?

gt17 is a bit big fir a 998 look at the gt15 instead. Yes you can use the dizzy from the metro but it is better to use mapable ignition such as megajolt etc.

 

You can use the metro carb but you can turn a normal hiff44 into the turbo one by using the metro turbo rebuild kit, the carb needs to be sealed for boost.

IMO, you should fit a 1275 engine. The 998 engine will need a full rebuild before fitting a turbo anyway, so start off with the bigger/more powerful N/A engine to start off with. No replacement for displacement and all that.  I've always wanted a turbo engine, and started collecting bits including the exhaust manifold, and ended up selling the manifold and buying a 1293 turbo half engine.

 

To answer your questions, NO, You can't use a metro turbo dizzy on a 998. As above you can modify a N/A HIF44 for turbo use. A gt17 is also too big for a 998.

For a road going 998 there are better choices than the GT17. You don't need to use the Metro ECU & there's no real reason to use it really, unless you're after every last bit of reliability ? There's a post at the top of this section explaining what it does, if you're not sure.
A turbo HIF or suitably modified NA HIF will both do the same job. The turbo dizzy can be used but will most likely not be anywhere near correct for your build. As suggested above look into programmable ignition, dizzys are clockwork technology.

OK let me explain how I ended up with the GT1752 selection.

 

I understand the T3 from the metro turbo is too big for a 998, and that Fusion Fabs supply manifolds that avoid bulkhead cutting, and they state that their GT1752 manifold is ideal for a 1275 setup or fast road 998.

 

My car presently has a 295 head, mg metro inlet manifold, SW5 cam and Maniflow exhaust system.

 

So the question is with some fettling of the head to port/valve sizes, lightened clutch/flywheel assembly etc would my engine be in fast road 998 territory and therefore make the GT1752 suitable?

 

And what then of the turbo distributor in this instance?

You won't get full boost until 4.5-5k with a GT17. GT15 would be a much better suited turbo for your application, you'll have better torque across the rev range rather than waiting patiently for it to spool.

Hi,

To get the GT17 to spool earlier you could up the compression ratio but thid would limit the amount of boost you can put in.

Maybe with mappable ignition you could increase advance and therefore torque in the lower rev range which would help spooling?
