Is anyone still competing in racing events? Or are most people here casual drivers?

You're definitely right. Early morning for me. Bear with me!

I wish I was, but having recently been informed that a season in the Dutch competitions will set you back about 50 grand a year. Racing here is a rich man's game. I would like to get into rallying, that's still somewhat cheaper, but you're still looking at pretty horrendous entry fees for single day events.

I competed with my 1970 mini cooper s in a sprint at Goodwood this year, and did the National Brighton Speed Trials (oldest motorsport event in UK - running since 1905 - a 1/4 mile timed trial) -
same car gets me to work , shown at classic car concours events too.
Not in the "professional" league - I can't afford that - or as fast as the modern or track only cars
but affordable fun and gives contemporary classics a run for their money...

What does "contemporary classic" mean? Oxymoron?

Contemporary classics are, for example, a Ford Anglia, a Triumph Herald and a Morris Minor.
A Model T Ford, an Austin seven and a Hillman Imp are not Contemporary classics.

but affordable fun
Years ago when I was tangled up with Rallying (PRC Class), that's all we were doing it for. We didn't care for placings, only finishing in one piece and driving the car back home again.
Was an experience and loads of fun.

I still compete. Hillclimbs and sprints. The last one I did on the 5th of this month.

No - cars that were produced in the same time period and similar, in so much as they might have competed in motorsport when new or produced with same era of engineering and design.
not contemporary in a modern or now meaning.

I've competed for quite a few years now on the Northern Ireland Autotesting Circuit and also on retorspective rallies and targa events.
I've taken this past year off competing to allow me time to my Traveller finished for use as my wedding car, and to then get married. I hope to be back competing again next season all being well.
