Hi all, no matter how long I let the engine warm up, the fan only blows cold air, even with the heater knob fully pulled out. Where to look first to sort the problem out? After all, Winter Is Coming, as they say...

Thanks!

Ric

The heater knob needs to be fully in for the heater valve to be fully open :shy:

could be an air lock, sticky heater control valve, blocked heater matrix at worst

check matrix by undoing both hoses fill one the other should run freely out that will also run out any air lock

check control valve much the same way disconnect hose do same

thermostat missing stops heater

Really? Well I'll be! It must be said, this knob's icon isn't really very clear. It really looks like "out" is hot and "in" is cold. I'll have to check again. Duh!

All depends on the year, Looking at your pic it's an '94 on model. Your's is pull out for hot and in for cold as you first thought. The older style heater taps were in for hot and out for cold.

Apologies, mines a 1980 car, so I'm not up to date with the new technologies

That control knob looks like left hot and right blue :ohno: It is confusing, I am used to the old type with a tap on top of the cylinder head.

I have never found a Mini that needs the knob pushed in for heat they have all been pull for heat.

sounds like low water level.

When the heater knob is pushed in on my mini, the heater valve is open so provides heat in the car, when it is pulled out the heater valve is closed so no water passes through the heater matrix, I have fitted an expansion tank (similar to the SA Minis) which enables me to keep a check on coolant level without removing the pressure cap.

Hi Nick

My GT was made in 1979 and registered on the 1st Jan 1980, the heater valve is similar to the mini spares item in the attached link

The Mk1 heater was definitely push for heat. It has a pretty clear cable, unlike the one above

I had this last winter with my RSP. My wife was not happy.

I just backflushed it and it was right as rain.

Yip this valve when the control is pushed in is then in the open position. I modified the linkage to below the valve so it would have the opposite effect. Here we hardly ever have to use the heater so it looks yuck if the control knob is always out to close the valve :D
