They’re interesting valves Nicklouse - I’ve never seen them with a pivot point on top of the valve, only the one with the pivot/hinge at the bottom as per the photo on the bottom of the previous page and:

Probably an air lock, leave it running with the radiator cap removed until it's all warm, are the hoses getting warm to and from the radiator?

Have a good squeeze of all the hoses to feel for warmth and water flowing, it might even burp the air lock out as you squeeze, operate the heater valve and keep squeezing.

Just watch your fingers on the fan blade and alternator etc.

Yep we went from an 87 to a 95, both standard carb models and the knob was opposite.

Have you checked that the cable is actually operating the heater valve?

And is the heater valve clogged?

Mine got progressively stiffer, until the outer cable was moving rather than actually operating the valve. It was also chock full of silt.

I think the SPi valve is pretty much the same as the MPi, but in a different location.

For what they cost you might as well fit a new matrix.

If you can link the pipes together you should be able to check that hot water flows when the tap is in the hot position and then cools down after a while when moved to cold.

I recently had to replace the heater matrix on my 94 Mayfair auto as it had a leak. Managed to get a Valeo replacement matrix.

The inlet and outlet pipes were also completely blocked with hard crud. They were both quite badly corroded as well. Replaced these with stainless steel versions.

You realise how lucky we are to be able to get spares so easily and some quite reasonably priced.

Take a look at this previous thread on the matter, (including the AVV IT guide to flushing your matrix with a garden hose)
