So my 98 Rover mini is basically the MPI motor with SPI and air conditioning. It was a Japanese market mini which I have had imported into Australia. They were built this way by Rover. As you may appreciate all my parts are ordered and shipped from overseas into Oz. I plan on ordering a lightened verto flywheel but am unsure whether my flywheel is the single tooth missing reluctor of the 92 to 94 SPI or the four tooth missing of the post 96 MPI. Any ideas or knowledge would be appreciated. I need to order one and have it machined/ lightened but do not want to order the wrong one and have to send it back again. Regards Waz

Watching this with interest because I'll be renewing my clutch and plan to fit a lightened flywheel at the same time.

 

I assume your JDM Mini is the same as mine, also 1998 ... MPi ignition (no dizzy) but SPi injection. If there's no dizzy I think it must need the flywheel trigger as per the MPi? Definitely need someone to confirm though, I think earlier JDM Minis had a dizzy so it does get confusing.

Hi,

You don't need 4 missing teeth for the coil pack, that will work fine with one missing tooth.

The standard SPI has 2 missing teeth.

Does it have a cam sensor where the mechanical fuel pump used to be?

Hi Bobbins, Yeah mine has the MPI ignition. No dizzy. I'll keep you posted

If it has the MPi block and the wasted spark coil pack and no distributor, it will be the MPi type flywheel. The only way the ECU can determine when TDC occurs on cylinder 1 is from the four distinct missing teeth on the flywheel.

 

Easy way to check is to remove the starter motor and then turn the engine over by hand and count the missing teeth through the starter motor aperture.
