There has been a lot of discussion about this on the MK1 forum, both pre and post auction

I was at the sale and there was a lot of interest in the car, I personally thought £5/£7K, but

there was £10K on the table when the sale started! so kept my hands in my pockets.HaHa.

The sale was being filmed for a program sometime about April apparently.

the car, which needs a new body, engine and full restoration.

So this is gunna be a legit restoration or another one where the vin plates fall off and attach themselves onto the body of an 850 city ??

Is it a legit restoration if the shell is just used as a jig to hang all new panels from before the VIN is moved over?

That shell could be restored. A friend of mine has a full body jig. It would need a new floor and front bulkhead plus a lot of other panels, but it do-able.
But one might suspect that a Mk.1 shell will be found to replace this one.
Since a high proportion of 'S's have been reshelled in this way and this includes virtually every rally Mk.1 it is a bit hypocritical to criticise this approach.
Author Graham Robson said that he can't think of any ex-works Mini which has not been re-shelled at least once.

I’d imagine if someone has spent £20k on this, they’re going to do it properly.

Even if £15,000 were spent on doing it well it would still be worthwhile.

I wasn't criticising the approach, just my understanding is that it isn't legal, which makes it quite risky if you've put pics of the car as it is now in the public domain with the reg plate on display.

You can buy heritage mk1 shells these days so I think it can be done legally, just.

They’re a lot better now I believe, but not good enough to use to restore something like this.

I'm sure they'd be better than what it has now.
