Hey everyone. Just joined here. I've got a 1973 Clubman Estate and I have an issue and I'm hoping someone can point me in the correct direction. Keep in mind, this car is in exceptional condition and the electrical system reflects that. Of course, from the horror stories I've heard of Lucas electrical systems, I guess anything's possible. So, to put it simply, the car doesn't start. I'll turn the engine over, it'll fire up but then instantly shut off. It's as if I'm turning the key all the way off as soon as it starts. I replaced the ignition switch today and nothing has changed. The carb is getting gas and the timing, though probably not adjusted perfectly, is in a spot which allows the car the fire instantly. It obviously has spark. I think I recall the previous owner saying they put in an electronic ignition but, I'm not 100% on that. I know something like that should be pretty obvious but, you'll have to forgive me for not being the most knowledgeable about this stuff. Leading up to the current state it's in, the ignition (seemingly) was acting strange. According to the previous owner, the car would turn over and over but only start when the key was released. Then, one day, they started it, pulled it out of the garage, and it shut off by itself and didn't start up again. Since then, the car has been off the road for around 9 years (don't worry, I flushed the fuel system and freshened everything up so, old fuel is not the issue).

So, I've replaced the ignition switch, it's getting fuel and has spark. Anyone know where I should look next?

Thanks!

sounds like a wire the wrong way round on ignition

put a + feed to coil independent of ignition

see if it starts

then you have a clue
