Thanks for the info Spin. I didn't know about the Galway Mini Centre.

I got some parts... from Huddersfield Mini Spares.


Got the Mini on stands to take the tires to get mounted.

What's this plastic bottle with these tubes going into it?



The good:
I replaced the frayed driver's seat belt with a new one. It looked like the old one got smashed in the door several times.
I cleaned the electrical connections at the front of the car around where the horn is.
I also took the wires from the fuse block and put dielectric grease on them.
I finally found the hazards flasher. It was behind that tan bottle.

The bad:
The head lights, tail lights, stop lights, instrument lights, and indicators don't work anymore. The indicator flasher unit is making a quick clicking noise.
I believe I have the wrong fuses in the block. I believe I have;
30A
25A
25A
20A

I think when I took the wires off, cleaned them, put dielectric grease on them and put them back together, I must have messed up a ground.
That may be why the lights aren't working anymore. I don't know. The horn still works. The light switch is getting power, but the lights no longer come on.

Now I need to find some fuses. The fuses at Halfords are pretty dang expensive and apparently low quality. I'll probably just pop into a local auto parts store tomorrow and try and pic some up.

Where do you guys get yours? Mini Spares/sport?

The plastic bottle is being used as a crude oil catch tank ,the breathers would originally have been plumbed to a charcoal filter under the LH wing and to the original air box. 

You should get decent fuses in any local motor factor, I would think most of your problems are still at the fuse box, instruments and tail lights use the same fuse but different earths.

A bad connection will still show 12volts at a volt meter or test lamp but when you put the lights on the connection breaks down.

I got new tires put on!
I got the dash back in to take it to NCT registration. It was the first time I drove it (it's about 20 minutes to the place) and it was fun. The Mini is loud! At 100 kmh it was running at about 4,000 rpms which seems high to me. It was loud and bumpy too. The brake lights and turns signals didn't work on the way there, but they did on the way back. I'm glad I went when it was daylight out! I didn't get to complete the registration process because revenue has to determine what VAT/VRT will be. It could take up to three weeks they're saying.

I took the grill off to check the wiring in the front and saw this gnarled up wire. I taped it up so it wouldn't cause any shorting issues.


I've checked the wire going into the head lights switch and it has power until I turn on the switch, then it doesn't have power anymore.

The headliner light was wired with the regular light and LED light, so I took out the LED lights. Now the light doesn't come on anymore.


I think I'm going to buy some wiring, connectors, and tools to replace the headlight wiring. I still need to wire in the fog light too.

Also, I don't think JDM Minis have the dim/dip system. Apparently this was a UK feature. Do you guys know? I can't find any JDM wiring diagrams for it either.

Cool. I'll check them out.

I got my reverse light switch for Minispares yesterday and put it in. Now the reverse lights work! I need have to put the Mk4 tail lights on and refit the rear fog.

I also adjusted the handbrake so both rear wheels lock up. Previously only the driver's side would lock, and not the others. I noticed a fraying cable on the driver's side, so I'll need to get that fixed.

Got more parts!!!


The fuse block is pretty cheap so I figured I'd replace it to see if it helps out some of the electrical issues I'm having. The fuse block had the wrong fuses in the top and bottom spots. I replaced the fuse block and my lights work again!
The rear fog switch works intermittently so I guess it needs replaced. Actually all the switches look like they need replaced. They're pretty old and crusty.

The driver side headlight is still very dim. I assume it's a bad ground, but I haven't been able to dig around in there yet. I may run a new ground to the driver side headlight, but I don't have any wiring supplies.

I found a bank of grounds on the driver side fender near the brake booster. I took them off, sanded them down, put some dielectric grease on them, but the driver side headlight is still dim.


Here's where the screw holding the grounds go in. I think there's too much paint and no exposed metal potentially causing the bad ground issues.

You have cleaned the earth connections beside the servo so most likely the bullet connector in the top left of the first picture you posted o 28 th Feb. . Check the condition of the black wire from there to the headlight.
