Minis to make Members’ Meeting debut

Goodwood will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the mighty Mini’s launch with a new race in next April's Members' Meeting.

Called The Betty Richmond Trophy, it’s the second new contest revealed for the 2019 meeting and is for pre-1966 Mini saloons and variants.

77MM to celebrate 60 years of the Mini with awesome one‑make race

Few cars have captured the public’s imagination so vividly over the last six decades as Britain’s version of the ultimate people’s car. So to celebrate 60 years since production began Goodwood will celebrate the life of the Mini with a single-make race at the 77th Members’ Meeting.

60 original Mini race cars to compete at the 77th Members Meeting

"The all-Mini Betty Richmond Trophy race at the 77th Members’ Meeting in April has proven so overwhelmingly popular that Goodwood has decided to increase the grid to a staggering 60 cars. That’s right, sixty cars."

I was down at Owens Fabrication on Monday and lucky enough to see the 'surprise' they're building for this event. I can't wait to see it out on the track next week :)

60 classic Minis will race head to head in the Betty Richmond Trophy to celebrate 60 years of the famous motoring marque; and punching well above its weight will be a 1964 Austin Mini Countryman complete with wood trim. Yes, you heard it right, a Mini woody estate… in a Mini race… at Goodwood! :mrcool:

The full story is coming soon but in the meantime feast your eyes on these fantastic images:-

"From rotting shell to racer in four months: 1964 Mini Countryman saved from the scrapheap and transformed into a classic competition car packing more performance than a Golf GTI"

  • This 60s Mini Countryman was a rotting shell at the start of the project
  • It's since been modified into a fully-fledged period racer with a roll cage
  • It's the only estate model ever built to 'Appendix K' racing specification
  • With 130bhp and a weight of 630kg, it has more performance per tonne than a brand new Volkswagen Golf GTI hot hatch

To the untrained eye this might look like a well-kept classic Mini estate, but lurking underneath is a highly-tuned race car that's due to hit the track for the first time this month. The 1964 Austin Mini Countryman - not a Traveller - has been saved from the scrapheap, thanks to one enthusiast who has turned it into the ideal classic competition car:-

The racing in The Betty Richmond Trophy was unbelievably close with Nick Swift and Nick Padmore swapping the lead once or twice a lap absolutely amazing seeing 30 minis on the track at one time.
