Hi all,

That's it - I've lost enough dental fillings driving the Mini on its knackered suspension. I am looking to upgrade to the smoothest ride I can get. After some research, I am looking at replacing all my cones with a Moulton Smootha Ride kit, available from Minisport here. It is supplied as standard with Boge dampers (el cheapo?). I read recently a post from somebody who used KYB dampers instead, and is really happy with them. What dampers would you recommend? What are the advantages of Gas-filled dampers as opposed to oil-filled?

Thanks,

Ric

I have KYB Gas-a-justs as that's what the consensus seems to be for the best road shocks.  I think there are 'better' shocks but they tend to be more biased towards out-right grip on smooth roads.

Unfortunately I can't comment on how good they are as although they've been on for two years I've not really driven the car, but that's what I was told when I asked a couple of winters ago.

I have standard genuine cones, though I think the red=dot ones tend to be recommended, they're a little stiffer aren't they?

Here's a link to the kit but without the shocks included. http://www.somerford...roducts_id=3239
I use KYB Gas A Just on the front of my Mini and they are very good.

I’m a fan of KYB gas adjust too. Took off Spax adjustables and much prefer them.

Just had a long and pleasant phone conversation with Tom from Minisports, and he has advised that the best option is just to fit the standard Boge shocks that come with the kit. They're the dampers the kit was designed around. He says that KYB gas dampers will actually stiffen the kit up, which kind of defeats the purpose of the Smootha Ride setup. Minisports have worldwide exclusivity for this kit, I guess they know their product, right?

I guess they want your money right?

I'm not saying they're wrong, but they would say that.

I have just fitted the smooths ride kit with the boge dampers from Minisport. I have to say that although I have not covered many miles since and am probably a more sedate driver the driving experience has been transformed and I am more than happy with it.

I fit a set with the std Boge dampers and found them to ride nicely - if you're tired of getting beat up by your Mini's suspension, I think this is the way to go.

I have standard M-Machine rubber cones with "cheapo" Sachs/Boge oil dampers (bought them by less than half the cost of gas KYB) and HiLo's set in original height and that setup is super comfortable, it surely doesn't feel like a mini suspension.
