Hi everybody,

i've read a lot of topics about this kind of problem, but i can't find a solution to mine, here's the issue:

- i turn on the parking lights and they works;

- i turn on the low beam lights and works only the right, the left does not switch on;

- when i turn on the high beam lights, these does not switch on, the low beam lights stops working and stays only the parking lights.

The other lights works properly, clacson, hazard and indicators are all good.

I tried to replace the left low beam with a new one, but did not give a result, and the switch on the dash panel is good, because turns on the lights properly....this problem came to me when I got home in the evening last week, I turned on the headlights and I felt a burning smell in the area of the steering wheel, what do you think is the problem?

My car is a Austin Mini 1000 Mayfair of 1984, 998 cc

Thank you for your help!

When you switch from dip to main or back it swaps the filament in the bulb .. it doesn't turn both on at the same time. So obviously make sure both filaments in both bulbs are intact.

First start by checking all the connections especially any bullet ones at the front as these corrode and prevent a good connection.

But if you also have a burning smell, that could be the lighting switch!

Yes, it sounds /smells like the switch. You will probably need to renew the block, too. Minispares do a replacement loom section.

I would recommend buying a "Wired by Wilson" loom to obviate this problem in the future.

Good luck

Can i test this switch? because i can't underestand why the other lights works properly..i mean the right low beam works if i turn the switch on..

Thanks

Remove the switch. (I use 2 small screwdrivers to lever it out) You will find a white/fried brown block connector on the other side.

Check your Haynes for colour coded wires. (I have not got mine to hand)

Using a short piece of wire, test the live to sides, dipped and main beam. (use the stalk to switch between them)

I reckon you will find all will be fine-the lights will come on.

You then know you have to replace the switch and possibly the block connector. I doubt the stalk is at fault, though with minis, you never really know. You could also have an earth problem, too, probably those pesky bullets by the horn, like gazza82 said.

Good luck.

Cool i will try later, maybe as you said is the switch that gives problem. in case i will replace it, but i was reading that my 4 dip light have a special relay installed, i think is this one, cause the wires looks similar

Do you think that maybe is this relay that is broken? cause the switch itself works for the side lights and for just the right low beam, but the stalk on the steering turns off everything.

I would get a voltmeter out before buying any switches and back track the wiring to confirm you have a circuit through the bullet connections behind the grill out to the lights, the headlight circuit is as follows http://www.theminifo...-blade-fusebox/

So yesterday i've removed the switch from the panel in the car and tried to connect the cables with a free cable, but it's not a switch problem because only the right low beam turns on, while if I push the lever on the steering wheel, the high beams do not light up, and the low beams go out.

Which is how it works! It transfers the power from the dipped filament to main beam filament. Only one is active at any one time.

So now you have to work out if that power is reaching the bulbs. If it is, then the bulbs are shot.

Dipped beam wire is blue with red trace, main beam is blue with white.

I'd check the connectors for dip and main beam tucked under the bonnet by the horn just behind the grille. I had an issue with dip being fine and then when going to main beam the nearside light went out and the right went to main. All caused by a bad connection on the blue/white wire to the nearside. All cleaned up and bingo!
