I had a call that the caller said was my bank. I said that I wanted to ask some security questions and asked for my mother's maiden name, my post code and my date of birth. They hung up.
Of course, they might well have already been in possession of that information, but if they had replied and got it right I would have known the call was a hoax as your bank will never answer those questions.

The simple rule for that is, if I didn't initiate the call no details are given. I'll call back on a number provided on 'official' communications' or from a trusted source.
I had it recently when we switched broadband providers, their call-center called to do a 'performance' check and asked for a load of details. I refused to give them, their solution was to send a piece of information via email and to use that to confirm who they were. Refused that to. If I can't talk to these people via an official number it's game over. (This was a genuine call, but I stand by the principle....and I didn't want to complete their survey).

When I get any cold calls I let them give me their speel then tell them i'm really interested, then say 'hang on the door bells just gone, don't go away' then I mute the phone and leave them.
I had one caller on the line for 13 minutes.
The downside is they will call back but the positive is I consider i'm doing a public service as while they are on hold to me they aren't bothering other people!
