Hey guys,

Does anyone know of any companies (or individuals) that make a blanking plate for the silly, massive hole in the bulkhead behind the carb in early minis? I know the cover/jute mat things are available but would like to have something more substantial and offering a cleaner look if possible?

Cheers

Simon

You can make your own with a sheet of 1.2 mm thick aluminium.

However, the speedo cable will need to go through the plate, or you can use a longer speedo cable from a BMC1100 and run it into the car near the wiper motor then behind the interior trim with a 90 degree elbow into the back of the speedo.

For motor-sport the bulkhead must be fireproofed, so an aluminium plate is required there. It should be sealed with a flexible sealant.

Cheers. I was thinking about that but the loom and speedo cable (as you say) would need to be dealt with. Was hoping someone made one so I didn't have to lol.

Minis fitted with the 'Clubman style' dash (dials in front of driver) have a black metal blanking plate screwed over the bulkhead hole. This plate includes a large grommet for the wiring loom to pass through and a pressed in indentation to give clearance to the SU Carb. They come up for sale on ebay, sometimes with the wiring loom attached.

However when a central speedo is fitted it is tight for space behind and a hole is needed for speedo cable. The large hole was omitted from very late Minis and also from the rear bulkhead which were originally used when bodyshells were mounted on a rotating spit for some processes like body dipping at the factory. It is a good idea to fit a metal plate over the hole in the rear seat panel.
The idea of just a fibre board cover between the passengers and a petrol tank is not ideal.

That DSN type of blanking plate in link is not for the large bulkhead hole behind the central speedo (when fitted).....it only blanks off the heater hose hole/ LH/RH drive master cylinder holes.

Seems a shame to cut into it for speedo cable and oil pressure lines, it's too pretty.
